Oral Histories

The SFA oral history program documents life stories from the American South. Collecting these stories, we honor the people whose labor defines the region. If you would like to contribute to SFA’s oral history collections, please send your ideas for oral history along with your CV or Resume and a portfolio of prior oral history work to info@southernfoodways.org.

ORAL HISTORY

Benita Villareal

El Rinconcito Catracho (Algiers Pulga)

Benita Villareal opened her Honduran food establishment, El Rinconcito Catracho, in 2017, expanding her business from selling used clothes and soccer jerseys. When a neighboring stand became available, Villareal took over the corner space, aptly naming it “Rinconcito,” which means “little corner,” and “Catracho,” an endearing term for the Honduran community.
