Oral Histories

The SFA oral history program documents life stories from the American South. Collecting these stories, we honor the people whose labor defines the region. If you would like to contribute to SFA’s oral history collections, please send your ideas for oral history along with your CV or Resume and a portfolio of prior oral history work to info@southernfoodways.org.

ORAL HISTORY

Steva Casey

The Atomic

Born in 1978, Steva Casey is a native of Birmingham, Alabama. She began serving at local restaurants during high school and college. Casey started working at Moneer’s, a small gyro shop, in the late 1990s. Casey picked up new skills everywhere she worked. She waited tables and bartended in many of Birmingham’s fine dining establishments.

Casey taught herself how to be a craft bartender and has since played an important role in shaping Birmingham’s craft cocktail scene. She began bartending at The Atomic Lounge in 2017. Casey runs cocktail competitions for young Birmingham bartenders. She also runs Swingshift, a pop-up dinner event series in Birmingham as well as Tiki By the Sea, a cocktail event that explores the culture of tiki bar era cocktails.
