Oral Histories

The SFA oral history program documents life stories from the American South. Collecting these stories, we honor the people whose labor defines the region. If you would like to contribute to SFA’s oral history collections, please send your ideas for oral history along with your CV or Resume and a portfolio of prior oral history work to info@southernfoodways.org.

ORAL HISTORY

John Bryant

Old Tavern Farm

John Bryant is a fourth-generation farmer based in Quentin, Virginia, where he operates Old Tavern Farm, a historic property that has been in his family since the early 1900s. Born in Fairfax County, Virginia, John grew up with a deep appreciation for farming, spending much of his childhood helping on his grandparents’ farm. After earning degrees from Radford University and Virginia Commonwealth University, he pursued a corporate career before returning to his roots. At Old Tavern Farm, John practices innovative and sustainable agriculture, including regenerative farming techniques such as cover cropping and crop rotation. His efforts earned him a Clean Water Farm Award in 2023. Passionate about soil health and environmental stewardship, John integrates traditional methods with modern technology. In addition to farming, John is an artisan who enjoys working with his hands, including as a potter.
