Oral Histories

The SFA oral history program documents life stories from the American South. Collecting these stories, we honor the people whose labor defines the region. If you would like to contribute to SFA’s oral history collections, please send your ideas for oral history along with your CV or Resume and a portfolio of prior oral history work to info@southernfoodways.org.

ORAL HISTORY

Anita & Thomas Roberson

Botanical Bites & Provisions

Anita and Thomas Roberson are the duo behind Botanical Bites and Provisions, a thriving farm in Fredericksburg, Virginia. Anita, born in Paris, France, and Thomas, a native of Georgia, both bring rich and diverse experiences to their farming journey. Anita’s early exposure to agriculture on her grandfather’s farm in Virginia shaped her love for sustainable practices, while Thomas’s practical approach complements their shared vision. With backgrounds in the military and federal service, Anita and Thomas transitioned into farming full-time in 2013. They embraced regenerative agriculture, combining traditional methods with innovative techniques like vermicomposting and cover cropping. Their certified naturally grown farm produces vegetables, honey, and cut flowers, with a focus on sustainability and community impact. Their contributions have been widely recognized, including being named Virginia Small Farm of the Year in 2015 and receiving the Sierra Club’s Living Green Award in 2022. The Robersons are committed to preserving agricultural land and fostering community through workshops, local food programs, and youth outreach. Together, they have built a farm that not only nourishes their community but also inspires future generations to embrace sustainable agriculture.
