Oral Histories

The SFA oral history program documents life stories from the American South. Collecting these stories, we honor the people whose labor defines the region. If you would like to contribute to SFA’s oral history collections, please send your ideas for oral history along with your CV or Resume and a portfolio of prior oral history work to annemarie@southernfoodways.org.

ORAL HISTORY

Carrie Jones

Florida Department of Agriculture and Consumer Services

Born in 1985, Carrie Jones was raised in Easton, Maryland, a town near the Eastern Shore of Maryland. Her interest in the water quality grew out of her early life experiences. Her grandfather, Charles Schnaitman, owned a boat rental business along the Wye River in Wye Mills, Maryland. Growing up, Jones spent much time with her grandparents and extended family at their shop. Jones attended Coastal Carolina University in Conway, South Carolina for her undergraduate and graduate degrees in marine sciences.

After Jones graduated, she got a job at Apalachicola National Estuarine Research Reserve (ANERR) in Eastpoint, Florida. Jones then became an environmental research specialist for Florida Department of Agriculture and Consumer Services. In 2018, she began managing Florida’s Submerged Lands Leasing program. Jones travels throughout the state to approve possible aquaculture lease sites and conduct site visits at already established lease sites.
