Rivendell Writers’ Workshop
March 19-22, 2015
The Southern Foodways Alliance tells stories about American food culture. We commission great writing. And we foster emerging writers whose work explores food and foodways. With those goals in mind, we are now taking applications for an SFA nonfiction writing workshop at Rivendell Writers’ Colony in Sewanee, TN, March 19-22, 2015.
Inspired by the literary legacy in Sewanee, Tennessee, the RWC provides a unique space and community for developing the craft of writing, as well as the time and place to take in the natural beauty of life atop the Cumberland Plateau.
SFA director John T. Edge (columnist, Oxford American and Garden & Gun; author or editor of a dozen books) and SFA managing editor Sara Camp Arnold (former associate editor Oxford American; editor Gravy ) will lead the workshop. They will discuss the techniques of successful food writing and work individually and collectively on creative nonfiction strategies with students.
Applicants should be at work on a book or long-form feature at the time of application. (It does not have to be placed for publication.) The work must be nonfiction and closely tied to themes of food or foodways. The workshop is not intended for academic writers, although it may be suitable for scholars intending to re-direct their work toward a general audience.
The tuition fee of $375 includes all instruction, meals, and lodging at Rivendell Writers’ Colony. Students are responsible for their travel to and from Sewanee, TN. Applicants who wish to be considered for a limited number of scholarships should indicate this preference on the attached application.
Applications are due on Monday, December 1 at 5 pm. Successful applicants will be notified of acceptance by Friday, December 5 at 5 pm. Incomplete or late applications will not be reviewed.
