Mango, Number 61 By Richard Blanco
Richard Blanco is the fifth presidential inaugural poet in U.S. history–the youngest and first Latino and gay person to serve in such a role. Born in Madrid to Cuban exile parents and raised in Miami, he centers his poetry collections and memoirs on the negotiation of cultural identity. Blanco’s many awards include the Agnes Lynch Starrett Poetry Prize, the PEN Beyond Margins Award, the Paterson Poetry Prize, and a Lambda Literary Award. He is a Woodrow Wilson Fellow and the education ambassador at the Academy of American Poets.
