Oral Histories

The SFA oral history program documents life stories from the American South. Collecting these stories, we honor the people whose labor defines the region. If you would like to contribute to SFA’s oral history collections, please send your ideas for oral history along with your CV or Resume and a portfolio of prior oral history work to info@southernfoodways.org.

ORAL HISTORY

Sylviana Herrin

La Petite Délicat

Sylviana Herrin is a baker in Lexington, KY. She moved to the United States in the late 1990s, fleeing political turmoil in her native Indonesia. Her sister was enrolled at the University of Kentucky, so she followed her to Lexington. Herrin obtained a degree from Eastern Kentucky University, and she worked at a manufacturing company for almost seven years.

Herrin found pastries in an unlikely place. While she accompanied her husband on a work trip to Egypt, Herrin experienced macarons for the first time at a French café on the first floor of their hotel. She was instantly intrigued by the French pastries lined up in perfect rows, each a different color and flavor. After much trial and error, she perfected her recipe and began selling her macarons on Etsy. Herrin opened a brick and mortar bakery in Lexington in 2015. She has slowly expanded her menu in order to ensure quality pastries. She offers not only macarons but also a multitude of croissant flavors, quiche, cheesecakes, and more.
