#SFAOH Atlanta Field Notes: Heirloom Market BBQ

Each summer our SFA oral history workshop focuses on a particular aspect of the work. It’s always hosted in Mississippi. This year was different.

We traveled to Atlanta, Georgia to give thirteen participants from all over the country the opportunity to learn SFA methods and approaches in the field. And then we set them loose to collect their own oral histories. They returned with an impressive range of stories from traditional Or Veshalom bureka baking to the “marriage” of Korean and Texas barbecue.

As we process the full interviews I want to offer a glimpse into the fieldwork of some of the participants.

Today we share with you snippets of an oral history interview with Jiyeon Lee and Cody Taylor of Heirloom Market BBQ. Their interview was conducted by participants NaVosha Copeland and Bang Tran.

Lee and Taylor met in the kitchen and together started Heirloom in 2010. Her roots are South Korea, his are East Texas, making what Jiyeon calls a “marriage” of styles when it comes to barbecue.
