SFA’s 2017 oral history workshop will be held in Atlanta, Georgia. Geared toward those who are new or moderately new to oral history methods and fieldwork, participants will think critically and creatively about the dissemination of oral histories and the impact recorded narratives have on communities and audiences.
This summer’s workshop will study and document stories along Buford Highway.
The SFA first began documenting stories of Buford Highway in 2010. This year, we are thrilled to begin a new phase of this project with We Love BuHi, a social enterprise that grew out of an Instagram account to document a unique community and share its untold stories. We Love BuHi’s mission is to catalyze and support a livable, inclusive and thriving Buford Highway through storytelling, community building, and advocacy.
By collaborating with oral history narrators, the SFA and We Love BuHi seek to build new relationships along Buford Highway to create a more engaged documentary practice, one in which oral history narrators and community partners are present and actively involved from inception of the project.
Our intent is that by sharing the stories of Buford Highway in responsible and respectful avenues, we support and promote a sustainable community that remains diverse and welcoming.
Open to undergraduate and graduate students, professors, educators, and SFA members, participants will learn SFA-devised methods and approaches to oral history, audio recording skills and techniques, an intro to digital photography, and hear guest lecturers from documentarians and community organizations documenting Atlanta foodways. The week will culminate in the collection and processing of oral history interviews using foodways as a way to open the door to life stories and experiences.
We strongly encourage people of color to apply.
SFA documents stories of the diverse communities throughout the South, and we believe it to be equally important for oral historians to represent that diversity.

- Dates: July 16-22, 2017

- Application Deadline: March 31, 2017, 5 PM EST
- Notification: By April 7, 2017
Cost of Workshop
- Student Participants: There are no workshop tuition fees for students. Upon acceptance, a stipend will be provided to students. Traditionally these stipends have been up to $500 to offset the cost of travel and lodging.
- Non-Student Participant Fees: $600 tuition fee for accepted applicants who are not currently enrolled in a college or university. Please note that travel, lodging, and meals are separate expenses and are the responsibility of participants.
- Lodging/Travel/Food: Lodging options include dormitory-style suites that provide each participant with a private bedroom and bathroom. Transportation and food are the responsibility of the participants.

Diversity Scholarships
Through the generous support of SFA member Edward Lee of Louisville, Kentucky, we are pleased to be able to offer two full scholarships to applicants of color who are currently enrolled in a college or university.
