Crystal Wilkinson is the Appalachian Writer-in-Residence at Berea College. Her works include short-story collections Blackberries, Blackberries, Water Street, and her novel The Birds of Opulence, which received the 2016 Ernest J. Gaines Award for Literary Excellence, Judy Young Gaines Prize for Fiction, and Weatherford Award. She is a founding member of the Affrilachian Poets Collective, and her work has appeared in journals and the Oxford American.
Wilkinson co-owns Wild Fig Books & Coffee in Lexington and co-founded Mythium: A Journal of Contemporary Literature with her partner Ron Davis. In this interview with Neela Vaswani for Kweli, she talks about her writing process.
