As part of SFA’s 2017 focus on El Sur Latino we explore a series of dishes across the Southeast that reframe ideas of southern food.
El Lupillo is a taqueria in Gulfport, Mississippi, owned and operated by Henry Vanegas and his father. A favorite at El Lupillo is the carnitas po-boy, a Mexican-style torta prepared on po-boy roll, blending the Vanegas family’s background with a Louisiana gulf favorite. Vanegas sees the po-boy as a way to appeal to Gulfport locals from various racial and ethnic backgrounds.
