DEADLINE EXTENDED: ABSTRACTS DUE April 15, 2016
The Southern Foodways Alliance, along with the Center for the Study of Southern Culture, and the Department of Sociology and Anthropology at the University of Mississippi, announce a call for papers, multi-media projects, or short documentaries for a symposium in the fall of 2016. The symposium will be held at the University of Mississippi in Oxford, MS, September 19-20.
We invite graduate students from a range of disciplines to exchange knowledge, experience, and scholarship. We welcome original research or projects on any topic related to southern foodways or agriculture. Presenters may elect to adhere to the SFA’s 2016 theme of “The Corn-fed South”—exploring the role of corn in Southern foodways and agriculture—but this is just one of many possibilities. Other suggested areas of interest include, but are not limited to:
- Immigrant foodways of the American South
- Methodological approaches to food studies
- Social, historical, or ecological studies of Southern agriculture
- Southern identity and Southern food
- Race, class, gender, sexuality, and age in Southern food
- Food system labor in the South
By Friday, April 15, please submit a two-paragraph (no more than 200 words) description of the paper or project. Please also include a short biographical statement. Please address any questions and send all materials to Afton Thomas at [email protected].
Acceptances will be emailed by Friday, April 29. Accepted participants’ final drafts of work to be presented at the conference will be due by 5 PM CDT Monday, August 1.
Conference fees, including three tasty meals, are waived for accepted presenters. Travel to Oxford, Mississippi, and lodging costs are the responsibility of presenters.
