I’m a Houston homer. Problem is, I live 600-plus miles from the city.
I learned to love Houston, while navigating its loopty-loop highways, eating pho and biryani with, among other friends, Bryan Caswell, chef and owner of the restaurant Reef.
In the wake of hurricane Harvey, I knew Bryan would help lead the recovery of his beloved hometown. Yesterday, I got this text:
Please spread the word.
We are doing 5,000-10,000k meals a day out of Reef. We were running on food donations but we are running out of product.
We are now running all monetary donations through our Southern Salt Foundation. Southern Salt has been buying proteins and vegetables. It’s a 501c3. Any donation can be run through the website: http://Southernsaltfoundation.org. Click under support us and there’s a link on the right.”
When I asked him who’s showing up to eat, he quickly wrote back: “We are feeding the GRB convention center, first responders, and multiple smaller shelters and hospitals. It was easy at first but now people are going back to work and the demand is still there.”
Much good work is now being done across Houston by people we here at SFA admire. In the coming months, more valiant efforts will come into focus. For now, know this: Bryan Caswell is feeding his people, the people of Houston. And he could use your help. Join me in giving.
