Oral Histories

The SFA oral history program documents life stories from the American South. Collecting these stories, we honor the people whose labor defines the region. If you would like to contribute to SFA’s oral history collections, please send your ideas for oral history along with your CV or Resume and a portfolio of prior oral history work to info@southernfoodways.org.

ORAL HISTORY

Montzerrat Centeno and Luis Martinez

El Lounge Ice Cream and Snacks

Montzerrat Centeno was born in Mexico City, Mexico and moved to Lexington, Kentucky in 2006. She is co-owner of El Lounge, along with Luis Martinez, born in Mexico City, Mexico and moved to Lexington, Kentucky in 2002. In 2013, Montzerrat and Luis decided to start a business that would not only serve as a community center but also help them pay the bills. El Lounge was originally an internet café, which the duo turned into an ice cream business. Montezerrat had a dream of having a place in which families could gather around and enjoying a snack or ice cream, just like how she remembers doing so growing up in Mexico. After sharing her idea with Luis, they found a supplier in Chicago who made homemade artisan style ice cream from Mexico. They now offer more than thirty flavors made with regional fruits like guava, mango, mamey, nanche, tamarind and sour sop. Their mission is to take customers back to a memory of when they were in Mexico, and share a piece of Mexico with the new generation so they can make new memories with their parents and family.
