Over the weekend, we learned of the passing of Delta tamale matriarch Elizabeth Scott. We are saddened for the loss of this Delta legend and are keeping the family in our thoughts. The funeral was held Saturday.

Elizabeth Scott, along with her husband Aaron, began selling hot tamales in 1950 on Nelson Street in downtown Greenville, Mississippi. Aaron Scott passed away in 1987, and Elizabeth retired from the tamale business in 2001 at age seventy-eight. In 2007, SFA awarded Mrs. Scott the Ruth Fertel Keeper of the Flame Award.

Today, Scott’s Hot Tamale stand can be found on Martin Luther King Boulevard in Greenville. Six of the Scotts’ nine children–and even some grandchildren–carry on the family business.
