Food Media South Preview: Are You Taco Literate?

“You can now study tacos at the University of Kentucky,” read the January 2016 headline on Munchies, a digital media platform from Vice “dedicated to food and its global purpose.” In a matter of minutes, Taco Literacy—the writing class about tacos that SFA Smith Fellow Steven Alvarez designed and piloted—went viral.

At Food Media South 2017, Alvarez will argue that to practice taco literacy is to examine the cultural, economic, and ecological dimensions of foodways. He asserts that taco literacy is Mexican foodways literacy, and Mexican foodways literacy is a prism for understanding the practices and relationships emerging amid growing barrios across the commonwealth, including Mexington in Lexington, Kentucky.
