SYMPOSIUM

Southern Foodways: From the Farm to the Table
Symposium 2001October 25-28, 2001

The fourth annual Southern Foodways Symposium mapped connections between the working of the land and the joys of the table.

Jennifer Abraham of Louisiana State University offered SFA’s first oral history workshop on collecting food memories. Pete Daniel lectured on the idea and memory of the Southern farm, while Lu Ann Jones’s presentation focused specifically on the female farm economy. Tom Rankin shared his documentary work on truck farmers in Copiah County, Mississippi, and a panel of symposium chefs shared “the dirt,” true stories of farm and restaurant collaborations. And between all the good food-- Mississippi fried quail, Brunswick stew, shoebox lunches with deviled eggs—attendees found time to muse on okra, hogmeat and hoecakes, and sweet potatoes.

FIELD TRIP

Field Trip 2001A Taste of the Carolina Piedmont
July 13-15, 2001

The first SFA Field Trip was co-hosted by the O. Henry Hotel of Greensboro, North Carolina -- an old-world-style, community-focused hotel. The event celebrated the Carolina Piedmont and its prolific foods. There were storytellers—Dori Sanders, Clyde Edgerton, and Jeanne Voltz—and biscuit practicums. There were foods aplenty—country ham, boiled peanuts—and a tribute dinner to the likes of Bill Neal. And, of course, there were mini-field trips, where guests could tromp through the gardens at Old Salem, the Old Mill at Guilford, and Goat Lady Dairy.
