SFA Symposium 2000Travelin’ On: Southern Food En Route
October 20-22, 2000

The third annual Southern Foodways Symposium was an examination of what happens when Southerners—and Southern foods—travel north, and west, and across the Atlantic.

Roy Blount, Jr. offered a treatise on expatriates yearning for Southern food. Richard Pillsbury expounded upon grits lines and barbecue belts, and Lolis Elie presented the inaugural Keeper of the Flame Award to pitmaster J. C. Hardaway, who treated the group to a barbecue feast.

Attendees enjoyed dueling gumbos with Leah Chase, Fritz Blank, and Johnny Faulk. Chef Neal Langerman of Georgia Brown’s dished up lunch in the Grove. There was the customary catfish at Taylor Grocery, and the weekend concluded with William Rice’s meditation on the life and legacy of Mississippi’s own Craig Claiborne.
